Day 2 - Jalan Jalan along Oxford Street
The day started with a continuation of the International Orientation Programme. A talk "Studying successfully in UCL" was pretty interesting, but I thought it would be more apt (and attractive) if it is titled "Academic System in UCL." Here's what is different here:
1) Not everyone is your Prof
Yup. "Professor" is only a term used for those in the leader in the academic world. Hence, everyone else is just a lecturer or tutor. Address them as Dr. or by first name if they prefer. There is no Assistant Prof, Associate Prof etc.
2) 'A's are super rare
Yeh. It is for those which are so damn good. B's is super good already. Nope, there is no dreaded bell curve to "push you up".
3) There are loads of readings but no need to read all
There maybe more than 8 readings per lecture, but unlike in NUS, many or optional. *phew*
4) It's either lectures OR tutorials OR seminars
Not like NUS. Lecture plus tutorials. I pity our lecturers sometimes.
Well, we went on to make our UCL ID card (finally I can use it to borrow the vacuum cleaner in hall) and get our computer account at last (Internet!). Everything ended by 11. With so much time on my hands, I decided to walk to Oxford Street, London's Orchard Road.
The sales there is crazy. Minimum cuts of 50%! Thought it is a good time to find shoes (of my size at last) and a good and cheap blazer, but nope. Either no size or no moolah. By 3pm, I was too tired(and it is getting dark), and hence decided to walk back. I didn't know I took detour into Regent Street and guess what I found.....
Despite the crowd and buzz along the shopping streets, I'm still amazed by the old classical facades (with a totally modern gut)
I wonder what those nets are for. Nope, it is too far from building edges to prevent any one trying to jump off. Then again, it could be metaphorical (especially in this economic climate)

My first Apple Store! (no, Singapore only has re-sellers, not stores opened by Apple)
The trademark glass staircase in all Apple stores around the world. All the laptops on display? People were either checking their mail or facebooking with it.
Forgive me for going crazy for this photo. No, the hair was a reesult of me wearing a fleece hat. :P

Heheh, those nets were used to hoist up Christmas lights. Not sure whether the lights are still there though. Anyway, the Christmas lightings over here in London is on a smaller scale as compared to back home, which comes a surprise to me. :)
Haha, I see. The nets were gone when we dropped by a week later. Speaking about scale of lighting, you should check out Bangkok's Ratchadamnoen Ave when it's near the King's Birthday (5 December) The scale of lighting is way more incredible than any of the light-ups in Singapore
